Aimee van Wynsberghe was born in London, Ontario, CA. She has a background in music theater and went on to receive a Bachelors of Science in Cell Biology (University of Western Ontario, with Honours). She completed a masters degree in both Applied Ethics (KU Leuven) and Bio Ethics (Erasmus Mundus, Cum Laude). She completed her PhD at the University of Twente under the supervision of Prof. Philip Brey. Her dissertation was entitled Designing Robots with Care: Creating an ethical framework for the future design and implementation of care robots.

Aimee van Wynsberghe has been working in ICT and robotics since 2004. She began her career as part of a research team investigating the network variables related to surgical robots in Canada at the CSTAR (Canadian Surgical Technologies and Advance Robotics) Institute. She is Assistant Professor in Ethics and Technology and the TU Delft. She is co-founder and co-director of the Foundation for Responsible Robotics and on the board of the Institute for Accountability and Internet Democracy. Aimee is a 2018 L’Oreal Unesco ‘For Women in Science‘ laureate. She has been named one of the Netherlands top 400 influential women under 38 by VIVA and was named one of the 25 ‘women in robotics you need to know about’. She is author of the book Healthcare Robots: Ethics, Design, and Implementation and has been awarded an NWO personal research grant to study how we can responsibly design service robots. She has written over 14 peer reviewed journal articles and has been cited over 400 times.

Aimee frequently appears in the media and gives talks for major companies and events. She has been interviewed by BBC, Quartz, Financial Times, and other international news media on the topic of ethics and robots. She has spoken at major international events including Web Summit (2017, 2018), the European Investment Bank Global Investment Forum (2017), AI for Good’s Global Summit (2018), and the Economist’s Innovation Summit (2018). Her talks cover topics like: robot ethics, the ethics of AI, the role of ethics in designing technologies, etc.
